St. Bernard Catholic Church in Wamego has a smoother welcome following Shilling Construction’s completion of asphalt paving on Old Post Road and Lewis Wilson Road. The improvements brought together Pottawatomie County, the parish, and local engineering and construction teams to improve access to a campus used by people throughout the community.

The project combined county funding with a substantial financial contribution from St. Bernard. Support from the Pottawatomie County Commissioners helped make the improvements possible.

Nathan Bergman with Bartlett & West designed the improvements. Wamego’s Ebert Construction handled the grading and site preparation before Shilling crews placed the asphalt pavement, completing the roadway improvements serving the church campus.

St. Bernard’s facilities serve more than its parish. The campus hosts town hall meetings, county activities, wedding receptions, and local gatherings. It has even provided a last minute venue for a high school event.

“This is a tremendous improvement for our parish and everyone who visits our campus. We’re grateful to the county and all the project partners for their work and cooperation. We couldn’t be more pleased with the result,” said Rev. Nick Blaha, pastor of St. Bernard Catholic Church.

The improved roads also benefit neighboring properties and Stepping Stones Early Learning Center, a newer early education facility along Old Post Road. Parents and staff traveling to the center each day share in the improved access.

“The County Commissioners’ support and St. Bernard’s financial contribution helped make these improvements possible. It took cooperation among the county, the parish, and the design and construction teams to deliver a project that benefits everyone who uses these roads,” said Tim Eisenbarth, Pottawatomie County Public Works Administrator.

Shilling Construction is proud to have completed the paving and appreciates the County Commissioners, county staff, St. Bernard, Bartlett & West, and Ebert Construction for their roles in making these improvements possible.
