40% Recycled Asphalt on Wheaton Road
Shilling Construction Company and the Pottawatomie County Public Works Department earned First Place in the Kansas Asphalt Pavement Association’s Overlay Award category for the Wheaton Road rehabilitation project, a secondary highway in Pottawatomie County. The project highlights how innovative asphalt design can deliver long term durability while reducing overall project costs.
The Wheaton Road overlay extended approximately 15 miles from the K 99 junction north to K 16 and included placement of more than 18,500 tons of asphalt. Completed in September 2025, the project improved ride quality, strengthened pavement structure, and extended the service life of this important rural transportation corridor.
A defining feature of the project was the use of a 40% recycled asphalt mix. By incorporating reclaimed asphalt pavement into the rejuvenated surface course, the project achieved meaningful cost savings while maintaining the strength and performance required for high-traffic roadways.
Recycled asphalt provides several advantages for counties and municipalities. By reusing previously milled pavement material, projects can reduce demand for new raw materials while maintaining long-term pavement durability. This approach supports responsible stewardship of public funds while also improving the sustainability of infrastructure investments.
Projects like Wheaton Road are the result of strong local partnerships. Shilling Construction Company appreciates the leadership of Pottawatomie County and Area Engineer Steve Roggenkamp in prioritizing infrastructure investments that support agriculture, commerce, and daily travel across the region. The award also reflects the dedication of Shilling’s field and plant teams, including Road Foreman Bryan Cruz and the crew members who executed the project safely and efficiently.
As a locally based contractor and asphalt producer, Shilling Construction Company remains focused on building infrastructure that strengthens the communities we serve.
